As we all know that, carbohydrates, proteins and fats are most potent macronutrients necessary for athletes or sports person to maintain the optimal performance. However, fiber or roughage is a key nutrient in nurturing a healthy gut. Therefore, daily use of fiber is essential to manage the overall health. As because our gut is considered as a second brain so eat well to think well. However, athletes procure most of the energy from carbohydrates by inculcating both simple and complex carbs. Fiber is also a type of complex carbs that remain indigestible throughout gut but fermented by colon microbiota.

Dietary fibers are of two types- soluble, resistant and non-soluble fibers. Insoluble fibers like cellulose, hemicellulose etc does not dissolved completely in water. whereas, soluble fibers such as partially hydrolysed guar gum, Resistant maltodextrin, inulin etc. forms a clear gel on mixing with water. Due to hectic schedule of training and unbalanced diet, athletes may unknowingly hiding fibers in their daily diet. One of the reason of insufficient fiber intake may be their sports type as endurance athletes require more energy rich foods which they will get from simple carbs. But fibers are also crucial to maintain their healthy lifestyle. Sometimes, athletes diet high in simple carbs may increase the risk of disposition of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular etc. However, soluble fibers also reduces the build up of poor fats or plagues that blocks the arteries and predispose the athletes to myocardial infraction and consequently, decreases his/her performance.

  • Alleviate constipation
  • Manage diabetes via reducing  the glucose absorption into the bloodstream by slowing down the exit time from stomach to colon.
  • Promote the growth of intestinal good bacteria.
  • Lowers the cholesterol by reducing the bad cholesterol.

Now the question appears that how athletes can add fiber in their daily meal. So, they can adopt various approaches such as by eating holistic foods or through dietary fiber supplements.
